Anticipation filled the air in the Ravenclaw Common Room. The Headmistress had announced during the supper feast that their exams might be canceled this term. The students gathered around the fireplace and waited for their prefect to confirm the announcement. The ancient stones exuded warmth and cast dancing shadows on the walls. The soft glow of floating candles lit up the students’ faces.
Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang sat next to each other on the sofa. A large blue scrunchie tied Luna’s long blond hair into a ponytail. She focused on the latest edition of The Quibbler. Cho’s long black hair lay over her shoulders with a neatly placed bow on the top of her head. She was studying for her History of Magic exam. After all, the cancellation of their exams hadn’t been officially announced yet. Other students had stood huddled around the fireplace, while some sat in chairs or on floor pillows. Each one was doing their own thing, mostly reading or writing.
“Did you hear that?” Michael Keener whispered, his voice so quiet he sounded like a mouse, as a faint rustling came through the swooshing sound of the flames.
Cho nodded, eyes narrowing. “Do you hear that? Sounds like something moving in there.”
Luna raised her eyes above the top of The Quibbler, and her brows furrowed. The trio’s attention was drawn to the noise as a small, cracked bottom half of an egg-shaped object rolled out of the fireplace, leaving a trail of glowing embers. Cho’s heart skipped a beat as she reached out to grab the mysterious object.
Upon examination, it was a part of some sort of egg. It was about the size of an ostrich egg but scaly with blue and purple hues. Cho’s fingers traced the intricate pattern and rough exterior.
“What is it?” Luna asked, setting The Quibbler aside and rising to join them.
“It’s some kind of eggshell,” Michael said, brushing his brown, hanging bangs out of his face as he leaned in to get a closer look.
“But where’s the rest?” Cho pressed, looking around expectantly.
Luna, Cho, and Michael moved closer to the fireplace to get a better look. A collective gasp escaped their lips; their eyes widened in amazement. They whispered in excitement the moment they realized what was happening. At the center of the flames, a tiny baby dragon tried to escape from the bottom half of his shell. It made a soft, tinkling sound as it wiggled and tried to claw its way out. The dragon was uncharacteristically small for this type of creature.
“A dragon hatchling!” Luna cried.
“But it’s tiny,” Michael breathed, awe in his voice.
Other students, hearing Luna, gathered in curiosity and wonder. The room filled with laughter as they marveled at the tiny dragon, each eager to touch its shimmering scales.
Amid the chaos, Luna watched the tiny dragon, her heart full of wonder and responsibility. The purple-blue baby was smaller than most newborn dragons. Luna knew he’d need extra care. She understood the task, but couldn’t ignore such a majestic creature.
Luna slipped on a pair of dragon hide gloves and scooped the tiny creature into her hands. “Hello there, beautiful,” she said as she slowly carried the baby dragon over to the couch and sat down. “You are magnificent!”
Cho joined Luna and stroked the top of the baby dragon’s head. “What are we going to do with you?”
“What do you mean by what are we going to do with you?” The confused look on Michael’s face would have told anyone he was contemplating something. “What are we going to name it?”
“We can’t keep it, so why name it? It’ll just be harder to let go.” Cho replied.
“Stop calling him ‘it.’ He’s a boy. Since he came from our fireplace, I’ll call him Blaze. Call him what you want,” Luna said sternly.
“Staff won’t let us keep him. He’s small, but he’ll be huge,” Cho said as the prefect entered.
The room quieted. Luna cradled Blaze, who purred like a kitten at her touch.
“What’s all the commotion?” the Ravenclaw Prefect called, approaching the group by the fireplace. Then his eyes widened. “Is that… a dragon?”
The prefect sat between Luna and Cho on the couch. “Magnificent. Where did you find it?”
“He’s a boy,” Luna replied. “We found him in the fireplace.”
“Well, as cute as he is, we can’t keep him. You’d better let me take him to Hagrid’s,” the prefect demanded as he held out his hands and waited for Luna to hand him over.
Luna hesitated, clutching the dragon closer.
“At least if he’s with Hagrid, we know this baby will be cared for properly,” Cho explained.
“Yeah, and we’ll see him whenever we want,” Michael chimed.
Luna sighed. “I’ll see you soon, I promise,” she whispered, kissing Blaze before handing him over.
As the prefect left, he paused. “I almost forgot—exams are officially canceled due to academic excellence. No finals this year!”
The room erupted in cheers. As excitement swept the Ravenclaws, Luna headed upstairs. Cho quickly followed. “Luna!” she called.
“Luna, are you okay?” Cho asked as they reached the top.
At the top of the stairs, Luna turned, tears in her eyes. “I’ll be fine. At least I’ll see him. Still, keeping him longer would’ve been nice.”
Cho wrapped Luna in a big hug. “We’ll see him tomorrow. Everything will be fine.”
